Rock Helps Samoa Recovery

Relief left for cyclone-battered Samoa Monday. A container full of food was loaded for hurricane victims, thanks to a Hollywood star.

Cyclone Heta blasted Samoa earlier this month. The destruction was extensive and now officials say people in Samoa need help, especially food. A container truck pulled up to the Times Supermarket in Kailua Monday to load up 30,000 pounds of food bound for Samoa. Workers loaded pallets of rice, Spam, corned beef and cooking oil.

Gus Hannemann has been coordinating relief efforts like Monday's for many years. He said this is the best he's seen. "This is the first time a 20-foot container with 30,000 pounds of food products will be going to Samoa. I'm so thrilled. This has never happened before," Hannemann said.

The reason they had so much food was because movie and wrestling star "The Rock" wrote a check to the supermarket for $10,000.

The Rock's grandmother lives in a village in Samoa and told her grandson they need food.

"What a perfect example of a local boy who has done good and is doing well. You know it's that old adage, 'It takes a village to raise a child.' In this case, it takes one child to feed a village," Hannemann said.

The food container will arrive in early February. More has been collected at local Samoan churches and Oahu fire stations.

Hannemann said the large donation helps, but they still need more. People can donate non-perishable food at fire stations around Oahu.
