Ref-attack wrestler facing jail for knife threat
A FOOTBALL thug who knocked out a referee is facing jail for threatening drinkers with a commando knife during a violent outburst in a pub.
Roy Bevis, a professional wrestler who goes by the name the Zebra Kid, knocked out Cambridge football referee Andrew Chapman after he sent him off for fighting during a Ridgeons League game.
Thug: Wrestler Roy 'Zebra Kid' BevisMr Chapman, of Ditton Fields, Abbey, was floored by the punch, but recovered to continue refereeing the game.
Now the Newscan expose Bevis as a thug with a long history of violence who could be facing jail after his most outrageous episode yet.
The 24-year-old has admitted "losing the plot" on a night out when he threw a beer bottle across a pub, hitting a drinker in the head, then drew a 12in Gurkha knife.
The wrestler, who has admitted affray, possessing an offensive weapon and assaulting a police officer, then lashed out when he was arrested.
Bevis had already appeared before magistrates to admit the offences before his latest spot of thuggery on the football pitch.
The court heard he had pulled the knife and waved it at a group of men during a night out in The Globe pub, in Lowestoft, Suffolk, in June. He then stabbed the knife into the bar and tried to knock down a door to get into a back room where staff were hiding.
He attacked the door with such force he injured his shoulder, and when police arrived he swung an arm at them, giving one officer a bloody nose.
Now Bevis is waiting to find out his fate when he is sentenced at Ipswich Crown Court. No date has been set for the hearing, but if Bevis is given a custodial sentence it will not be his first spell behind bars.
Last September Bevis, who lives in Norwich, was jailed for nine months for drink-driving and for dangerous driving.
According to UK wrestling websites, the Zebra Kid is one of the sport's most talented young stars, son of the well-known wrestler-turned-promoter "Rowdy" Ricky Knight.
After his last spell in prison, promoters the Frontier Wrestling Alliance released a statement welcoming him back, saying: "While the FWA does not condone Roy's actions, we recognise that he has now served his sentence."
Bob Richards, secretary of Thetford Town FC, said: "Roy Bevis no longer plays for the club or is involved with the club in any way.
"When we signed him this summer he turned up to training and appeared to be as good as gold, but this was a moment of madness that we will not tolerate."
