Joey Styles Commentary; Stacy Keibler Comments On TV Deal; ECW Coming To Canada TV

Gotta love this one. Joey Styles in his latest blog on the ECW website, chooses his 'Most Extreme Player' of this week.

Even though I'd rather watch snow on TV than see her in ECW, you'd think he pick Teen Kelly. She's supposedly 'ECW', and he would help one of their own kind. You can even pick Paul Heyman for his obvious 'Godfather 2' Kiss of Death to Tommy Dreamer. Unfortunately Pacino kissing his brother seemed so much cooler. Heyman's seemed a bit girly. And you can blame Tommy Dreamer's stupid 'reaction' for that.

Joey could have even picked the fans this week for bearing thru quite possibly the worse episode yet.

Joey Styles chooses a Smackdown wrestler as his favorite this week. Even though The Undertaker's match had nothing 'extreme' about it. And you wonder why ECW is considered a Velocity type show and not looked at as a possible separate brand. Here's the commentary:

Most Extreme Player for 7/20/06
By Joey Styles

This week’s MEP is the Phenom and future WWE Hall of Famer, Undertaker. Just days after falling prey to a gigantic double chokeslam at the gargantuan hands of Big Show and The Great Khali on Saturday Night’s Main Event, the Deadman accepted the challenge of the ECW Champion and made his ECW debut on Tuesday night knowing that regardless of the outcome, he would have to face Khali again this Sunday at The Great American Bash.

This WrestleMania-quality main event saw Undertaker empty his arsenal in an attempt to take the ECW World Title away from the 7-foot, 507-pound champion, doing everything from trading punches to going Old School and even attempting a leg-lock submission hold. It was anyone’s match as Undertaker turned his back on Big Show to meet Khali in the aisle. Despite Undertaker’s attempt to use a steel chair to slay the two giants, in the end the Phenom was again double chokeslammed, this time through the ECW announcers’ table.

On a personal note, this was my first time calling one of Undertaker’s matches and I actually had goose bumps during the Phenom’s entrance. It’s great to know that after all of these years in the business, the little kid in me who first became a fan is still with me.

On the lighter side, I am awarding the MEP runner-up spot to….myself, for spending four days in Texas with Tazz!

Saturday Night’s Main Event was in Dallas and Tuesday’s ECW was in Corpus Christi, so my old friend and new announcing partner Tazz decided to stay in Texas the entire time. Rather than fly home between shows, we drove together from Dallas to Corpus Christi.

I would suggest that if the United States has any difficulty obtaining sensitive information from enemy combatants at Club Gitmo, they should simply send Tazz into a cell to interrogate them. After the torturous six-hour drive with Tazz across the 105 degree Lone Star State, I would have confessed to anything to get out of that car, including but not limited to...-being the second gunman in the Dallas assassination of JFK.

I knowing the whereabouts of Jimmy Hoffa (he’s buried under the ECW Arena in South Philadelphia).

-holding Julius Caesar while Brutus (Marcus Junius, not Beefcake) shanked him!

On a personal note, I was glad that Sabu used a diving chair through a table to defeat Stevie Richards on Saturday Night’s Main Event so I could deliver my trademark “Oh My God!” scream on NBC…but the truth is, I would have done it even if Sabu won with a headlock submission.

Now that I have screamed “Oh My God!” on Monday Night RAW, WrestleMania and NBC’s Saturday Night’s Main Event, I am running out of things to accomplish on my announcing career checklist. I will hold off on revealing the remaining items for a future column.

Stacy Keibler posted the following message on her website, StacyKeiblerOnline.net:

"Well, my contract with WWE has come to an end. So, you know what they say about when one door closes, another one opens. After many months of meetings with several networks and studios, I have accepted a development deal with Touchtone TV. Under this ABC sister studio, I will either star in a pilot or join an existing Touchstone TV series.

I will keep you guys posted. Hopefully, you will be seeing me on television again real soon!"

ECW to air on Global in Canada

As of Friday, August 11th, Global Television across Canada will be a little more hardcore.

Extreme Championship Wrestling, which debuted in the United States on June 13 on the SciFi Channel, will premier on the Global Television Network nationally on Friday August 11 at Midnight. In addition, ECW will also be shown on the Xtreme digital channel on Saturdays at 1:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. and Sundays at 4:00 a.m. ET.

"This news is very exciting for us - WWE creates successful and vibrant television programming that we're sure our viewers will enjoy," said Adam Ivers, Vice President Programming, CanWest MediaWorks in a press release.

In the same release, Carl DeMarco, President, WWE Canada said, "This is great news for WWE and ECW fans in Canada. We're very happy that we're able to deliver ECW to 12.2 million homes in Canada."

In its previous incarnation, the independent ECW never had a television deal in Canada, only making it to the airwaves north of the border through the American channel TNN.

In addition, Global Television Network has also committed to adding both Monday Night RAW and SmackDown! to their programming lineup in Quebec, beginning with RAW on August 7 at Midnight on CKMI. SmackDown! will air on Saturday nights at 12:30 a.m. ET on CJNT starting on August 11.

This has been a busy week for TV news in Canada. On Wednesday, the WWE announced a deal with The Score to air Monday Night Raw nationally at 10 p.m. ET starting August 7th, after 11 years with TSN. The Score also announced that Smackdown will air on Fridays instead of Thursdays, and that it will create some sort of WWE show for Sunday evenings.
