Off-Storyline Injuries Thicken The Plot

The show must go on - in spite of what happens in the ring.

I remember watching a "WCW Monday Nitro" show a few years back. The Steiners were wrestling Steve McMichael and Arn Anderson in a tag-team match in hour number one - and a move or two into the match, Scott Steiner did a belly-to-back suplex on McMichael.

In the course of taking the bump, somehow, some way, McMichael's right knee connected with his mouth - and the impact sent two teeth flying out of his mouth and into the direction of the neutral corner.

At least that was what I had thought that I'd seen.

Confirmation came when Steiner immediately covered McMichael for the pin - and got the 1-2-3 about 90 seconds in.

The announcers, to their credit, did not breathe a word of what happened on the air - or point out anything unusual about the quick finish.

Not bad for a live broadcast.

Jerichoholic

Stuarts Draft-based wrestling promoter and former WCW and Smoky Mountain star Marvin Ward was talking with me on this subject the other day.

"(Former Smoky Mountain and current Ohio Valley promoter) Jim Cornette was doing this legends show. Man, that card was packed. They had everybody you could think of ...

"Anyway, I wasn't going to be on the show, but Jim, the way he ran things, he let you watch what was going on behind the scenes no matter what. That's why I'm doing what I'm doing now," Ward said.

Ward said he decided to buy a nice suit - to maybe catch the eyes of the legends on the card, maybe use that attention to get a shot at the big time.

"I was standing back there watching, and I remember the tag-team main event was The Thrill Seekers, Chris Jericho and Lance Storm, against The Heavenly Bodies," Ward said.

Building toward the big finish, Jericho, Ward said, "juiced up" - industry lingo for making himself bleed - "but he sliced himself way, way too deep. There was blood everywhere," Ward said.

"I'm standing back there in this nice suit, just bought it that day, and Jim runs over to me and says, 'Go get him. Go get Jericho.'

"They started to take it home, and I'm running down there, and it was just a mess.

"I helped Jericho back to the dressing room, and he was OK. But it ruined my new suit."

More gore

NWA-TNA star Kid Kash talked about a similar incident that he witnessed on a recent tour of Finland.

Kash, a.k.a. Fishersville native David Cash, was backstage during a tag-team match featuring former WCW star Kwee-Wee took a nasty turn.

Kwee-Wee was supposed to take a moonsault maneuver from opponent Sonny Siaki - and he did, but Siaki was slightly off target in the landing.

"His knees hit him square in the face," said Kash, who is studying to be a chiropractor in his spare time, and was summoned from his own pre-match preparations to provide medical attention to the fallen warrior.

The impact of the move broke Kwee-Wee's orbital socket, nose, jaw and shattered his eardrum, Kash said.

"The worst part is, we were in a foreign country, and we were having trouble communicating with the EMTs about what was going on. And Sonny Siaki, he's just running around like crazy. 'What I do? What I do?' It was a messed-up situation," Kash said.
