It’s always nice to visit Toronto, but it is always even better to get back to Oklahoma as the old saying is definitely true, that there is no place like home, thank you very much Dorothy.
Big news on the restaurant front as we still plan on opening our doors on Wednesday, June 27, in Norman, Oklahoma. Times are getting exciting here for all of us involved in this project, as the countdown is underway. We plan on having plenty of practice runs prior to opening the doors and have been using our new, state of the art smoker a great deal over the past several weeks on many of the catering jobs we have received.
The OU football players report back to OU for summer school on June 1 and to begin voluntary summer workouts in preparation for the fall season. Optimism is running high for my Sooners this season, even though the quarterback situation is still up in the air. I am sure we will be feeding the Sooners some “Q” this summer, from time to time, and occasionally have a handful of the players over at our home for cookouts.
The WWE Draft on June 11 in Wilkes Barre, which is already sold out, and should be an interesting night, as apparently several superstars will be getting new addresses. These are interesting times, as far as I am concerned, because new wrestlers create new matchups with the incumbents, which freshens up the product. I have no preferences as to who comes to RAW and I assume The King and I will stay on RAW, or at least I sure hope so. I have no desire to leave Monday Night RAW, and neither does the King. I don’t think any of the announce teams should be included in the draft. A change of scenery can be a good thing, especially for wrestlers who need new opposition. The draft, as far as fans are concerned will no doubt be a source of plenty of debate and discussion as the draft itself, is a subjective matter to say the least. The “wrestling media” will have a field day with this matter and I can almost guarantee you that the draft will be over-analyzed and pre-judged even before it has a chance to settle in, because that’s what the “wrestling media” does. Controversy creates (cash and) website traffic which is not a bad thing. Get ready for this subject to be beaten to death over the next several weeks. I do not know who is being drafted to where and will be as surprised as anybody as it happens on live TV.
I fumbled when I said that Joe Thomas; the former Wisconsin offensive left tackle, was headed to the Lions, when I knew it was the Browns! That’s what I get for writing late at night, which is usually when I get the time. My bad. Thomas is a stud and hopefully will not be a Tony Mandrich/Robert Gallery-like bust for Jerry Lawler’s beloved Browns. I did get it right when I said Thomas was going to be a rich man soon, nonetheless. While we are at it, if I was running the Browns, QB Brady Quinn starts from day one just as JaMarcus Russell does in Oakland.
I get hammered by a Redskin fan because I wrote some positive things about the Dallas Cowboys, who I follow because they are on our local TV every weekend, plus my friend Barry Switzer coached the Cowboys to a Super Bowl title in 1994! I am not anti ‘Skins, Mr. McMahon’s favorite NFL team, the last I heard if anyone is keeping score at home, but Joe Gibbs needs to keep Daniel Snyder happy or Coach Gibbs will be back full time in NASCAR. Keeping Snyder happy is simple… win the Super Bowl. Nonetheless, the ‘Skins-Cowboys rivalry is good for the NFL.
I had a blast celebrating John Wayne’s 100th birthday on May 26th by watching, to my lovely bride’s chagrin, SEVERAL John Wayne movies during AMC’s John Wayne Salute. As I sit here, I am drinking coffee out of a John Wayne Mug and we will have a John Wayne display of his authentic memorabilia in our new restaurant. Yes, I am a fan of “The Duke” to say the least, just like my late father was. We have been collecting John Wayne memorabilia for over a decade now and have some really neat stuff. Someone emailed us and asked if Tully Blanchard would ever become a full time color analyst in the WWE and knowing I have zilch to do with hiring those people – I don’t know the answer. But based on Tully’s extremely short lived WWE tenure of a few months ago, I seriously doubt it.
Thanks for the suggestion, but I can assure you that a “Dr. Heiney” Bar-B-Q T Shirt is not in the works.
I have not read the new NWA book, but I did see some of the wrestlers reading it in the afternoon at the last Raw. I plan on checking it out.
I am definitely going to read the new Bruiser Brody book written by Larry Mytasik and Barbara Goodish, Brody’s widow.
I am having a blast working on the new WWE video game from THQ. The twists and turns are so shocking I have to stop and read the copy twice sometimes to make sure of what I am reading. There are several legends incorporated into this new game, which really adds to it, in my opinion. For you “Gamers” out there, this is going to be one helluva game!
Yes, I have checked out the “J.R.” rap on You Tube and found it to be funny, but wonder how people get so much free time? I think I need more free time, so perhaps I am just envious. I have no issue with people having fun with my TV persona, as that simply goes with the turf. I do have issues with some internet people who consider themselves experts of the product of wrestling simply because they watch a bunch of TV and either operate or contribute to one of the multitude of websites out there. I watch every episode of the Sopranos, many times over, but I don’t consider myself an expert in writing, producing, or performing in a weekly, dramatic TV series and would feel pretty stupid in purporting that I do. That doesn’t seem to bother some people who rarely have a good thing to say about the wrestling business. The business has changed and will continue to change, I strongly suspect, and it won’t be changing back to the “good old days,” as much as many of us would like some aspects of the “good old days” to be incorporated into today’s product.
Site visitor, “Yep,” stated that I was not encouraging an “open dialog” with the fans who visit our site. He cited that I talked about my favorite cold beer when asked about it, but refused to discuss Batista being an alleged bully backstage and abusive to many of the Divas. I wonder how “Yep” knows this rumor to be true? Do you think that “Yep” actually is backstage to witness such alleged unprofessional behavior? Highly unlikely, but “Yep” is obviously a reader and believer of what he sees on selected internet sites, etc. Whatever. This site is not, and it will not, become a site to perpetuate unfounded, negative gossip as other site’s already have the market cornered on that. I don’t enjoy spreading rumors or negativity. Do I know any negative stories or embarrassing information on “the stars”? Hell yes, but what do I prove by sharing that manure with anyone in this particular forum? If this site isn’t fulfilling people like “Yep’s” needs for info or entertainment, I strongly suggest “Yep” and others like him simply not log on. Sorry, but I like writing about interesting things, personal experiences, stories of the road, my fun times in wrestling, football, Bar-B-Q, grilling, pop culture and life in general and not all the negative crap that some are completely obsessed with. I don’t even care to see, nor do I see, the comments that don’t make the site because they are either profane or just down-right mean and overly negative – or a combination of both. Case closed…. end of that story. Soap box stored.
Some have asked if I think Paul Heyman will ever start another wrestling company. This is almost laughable. Paul is done with investing in wrestling companies and has a variety of other projects he is working on at the present time. Does that mean Heyman is through with the wrestling business? I don’t have an answer to that one, but I would suggest that he is, to any large degree. Will J.R. be mentioned in Bret Hart’s new book? I have no clue, but I am sure I will buy it and read it. I have great respect for Bret, but I must admit I am tired of hearing the “You screwed Bret” chants that we still hear at some WWE events. Enough is enough already.
For the millions and millions of Lilan fans, Lilian is rehabbing from ACL surgery. I do not know when she will return to RAW, but she will in time.
My favorite wrestling memories of working in Chicago would include the bowling shoe ugly Country Whippin’ match I participated in with The Coach quite some time back. Perhaps it was the proverbial car wreck one could not take their eyes off of, as it got a surprisingly strong TV rating. I think it was also voted “worst match” of the week by the “experts.” They were right for once. We are developing a Bar-B-Q dry rub which we hope to have out soon, for those of you who have asked. I am also working on some potential projects with The Food Network for 2008’s Bar-B-Q Season.
Plenty of questions about MMA/UFC stuff. I like the UFC and mixed martial arts competition in general. I hope they continue to grow and prosper. I don’t see them as any more of an opponent to the WWE as any other viable PPV commodity. Will the UFC ever tour on a regular basis? I don’t know, but it seems that won’t happen, if ever, anytime soon. I don’t watch as many of their PPV’s as I once did, but that’s simply because of time and travel issues. I was surprised that Chuck Liddell was upset last week. Sounds like a return match is a natural. The key to MMA is the development of new stars and continuing to spread the word of their brand and what they are about. Will MMA spell wrestling’s end? Absolutely not, and that is a guarantee. There is plenty of room for both and I feel boxing is going to suffer from the MMA’s successes more than pro wrestling.
for those that have asked and live abroad, the WWE Shopzone ships J.R.’s products worldwide. I hope you will check them out.
For the record our Original Bar-B-Q Sauce is on the sweet side for those that have enquired.
No one in the WWE has approached me about doing my favorite matches on DVD, but I would be willing. I would have to give the list of favorites a great deal of thought, as I have many favorites to be honest with you over my 30 plus years as a broadcaster.
No, wrestlers should not be given credit for moves they miss nor should they be damned for missing them either. The annoying chants of “You F*&^%$ Up” when an athlete misses a maneuver ranks high up on the list of the “dumbass chant chart.”
Someone asked about who created the Chamber of Horrors in the WCW and I don’t remember, but I do recall the match being a stinker. I guess I should dig out a tape and watch it before I make a statement like that, but my memory seems to indicate the presentation was “out there.” I might have been on the booking committee at that time, so I may be partially guilty and if I am, please accept my apologies. Some ideas look much better on paper than they do when they actually occur.
We will get to your comments soon. Check back with us if you have the time or inclination. We do appreciate all your business and thank you for stopping by our store when you can. Your business is what keeps us up and running. Our new Hall of Fame offer should be up soon so please check it out. Be well and I’ll be back before I head to Florida for One Night Stand and Raw.
BOOMER SOONER! J.R.
