TNA Slammiversary PPV Results 6/18/06 (Orlando, FL)
Recap courtesy of Alan Wojcik:
These are results from TNA Wrestling’s Slammiversary PPV. Yes my friends TNA Wrestling or NWA: TNA as it was called in 2002 has been around four years. I have been covering them since day one and am humbled to be here tonight to enjoy this event. It’s great to see the promotion expand and co-promote house show events and sell their DVD’s on a national level. There were hundreds in the soundstage; shame ¾ of them won’t be here tomorrow for TV, fair weather fans.
The pre show was hosted by Jeremy Borash and Christy Hemme (who’s no Scott Hudson). Monty Brown came out and addressed the crowd. Brown said he wasn’t in the King of the Ring (or Mountain for that matter) and he was ready to become the new champion of TNA no matter who won tonight or whoever the new face of TNA is (rumor is its someone with a bad knee.) I believe he also challenged Samoa Joe to a match. Unlike the previous months we had a pre-show encounter:
Team Canada’s A1 and “Showtime” Eric Young defeated The Naturals (Chase Stevens and Andy Douglas w/Shane Douglas who stayed on the rampway). After the match “the Franchise” verbally berated the Naturals for their actions in the match. I would love to air my personal feelings here about this stuff, but this isn’t a shoot report.
Before the opening of the PPV Team 3D came out to the ring and also added some words about the anniversary of TNA’s debut PPV. Ray said there will not be any zombies in Orlando tonight. He also added the new product on TV sucks. 3D demanded a referee and the James Gang to come out to open the show. Instead 3D and “Slick” Mark Johnson headed to the back to find the James Gang.
The PPV went down like this:
(1) In a Bingo Hall Brawl, Team 3D (Brother Ray and Devon) defeated the James Gang (Kip and BG James).
It began in the back as 3D dragged the Gang out to the ringside area. Chairs were tossed in the ring by Ray. Kip and Ray played lightsaber chairs but Ray got hit hard in the head. Devon brought a kendo stick out and used it on Kip. Ray and Kip split off from Devon and BG. Guard rails were placed on four chairs by Ray as Kip was incapacitated. Kip charged Ray and was backdropped on the setup. This allowed 3D to work over BG without relief for a few minutes over by the TNA Pit. Kip finally got in the fray with a garbage can lid to the heads of 3D. Ray tossed a garbage can full of toys into the ring when the fight came back to the ringside area. Ray choked Kip out with a bra and went to make cheese with Kip’s forehead but was hit in his package. Devon and BG hit each other with cooking items as Kip was busted open from the cheese grater. 3D went for the Wassup package shot but Devon hit a garbage can lid BG placed. Ray teed off on BG’s package with a golf club. 3D set up Kip and hit the Doomsday Device but got two. Ray ordered some wood from Devon and he delivered in a non sexual way. Kip went to hit Devon with the One and Only but Devon hit him in the package, not ass. This allowed them to hit Kip with the 3D to win the match.
As the ring was cleaned up, Mike Tenay and Don West ran down the rest of the PPV for the home crowd. Backstage Jeremy Borash spoke to “King of the Mountain” Jeff Jarrett about tonight’s main event. Jarrett talked about how people have said he couldn’t achieve in the business. Tonight he would make the critics who said TNA wouldn’t last six weeks eat their words. When Jarrett finally finished, Larry Zbyszko came in and said he knew who the new face of TNA was and it wasn’t someone who would get along with Jarrett.
(2) “War Machine” Rhino vs. Scott D’amore and “Canadian Enforcer” Bobby Roode.
Never one to hide his feelings, D’amore talked about he had seen through Rhino’s plan. He claimed Rhino was afraid to face him in a singles match. When Rhino hit the ring, D’amore hit the bricks. Rhino dumped Roode to the floor and challenged D’amore to come to the ring. D’amore showed off his skills by immediately tagging out to Roode. Rhino was the aggressor, beating Roode down with power moves. D’amore patted Roode on the back and Andrew Thomas said it was a tag. Rhino chased D’amore around the ring and ran right into a Bobby Roode clothesline. D’amore laid in the boots to Rhinos head but his workout was broken up by Rhino. Roode got back in the match, working over Rhino’s back. D’amore and Rood worked as best as they could, beating down the former NWA World champion. But D’amore’s jawbreaker did nothing and it took Roode coming in to send Rhino back to the mat. Rhino used the crowd to get some motivation to fight back against the Canadians. That allowed Rhino to hit Roode with a belly to belly suplex. But Roode recovered and hit a Rude Awakening style neckbreaker for two. D’amore made several fans lose their dinner when he took off his shirt. He should have left it on because he missed a moonsault. With Rhino focused on Roode, D’amore snuck in and hit Rhino with the flag stick. Rhino recovered, dumping Roode to the floor and hitting D’amore with the GORE!!!
Jeremy Borash spoke to NWA World X Division champion Samoa Joe about his match with “Big Poppa Pump” Scott Steiner and the one year undefeated streak.
(3) In an X Division title contender match, Senshe defeated Alex Shelley (w/a new t-shirt), Petey Williams, Jay Lethal, Sonjay Dutt and Shark Boy.
According to Penzer this was an elimination bout. With too much action to follow, I will save my typing for the later bouts and do who got rid of whom. However I will mention at one point, all six were in at the same time and three suplexed the other three.
***Dutt eliminated Shark Boy after hitting a standing shooting star press.
***Lethal eliminated Shelley with a full nelson suplex into a pin.
***Williams eliminated Lethal after hitting the Canadian Destroyer.
***Senshe eliminated Williams after hitting the top rope double stomp to the stomach.
*** Senshe eliminated Dutt after putting in a Tree of Woe, climbing to the top rope and dropping both boots into Dutt’s chest.
Jeremy Borash spoke to Alex Shelley and Kevin Nash about the match with Chris Sabin. Shelley seemed to have lost his short term memory, claiming he was in the ring with wrestlers armed like a Detroit street gang.
(4) “Big Sexy Giant Killer” Kevin Nash defeated “the Future” Chris Sabin.
This boiled down to Nash’s size against Sabin’s speed. Early on Nash had control, slowing things down. When Sabin threw some punches Nash poked him the eye. Sabin hit a dropkick and Nash went to the floor where he conferred with Shelley. Shelley distracted Sabin long enough to allow Nash to sneak back in and hit a clothesline. Sabin hit Nash with a missile dropkick and tried for the Cradle Shock but couldn’t lift Nash. Shelley distracted Sabin again and this time Nash kicked Sabin in the face and hit a sidewalk slam. Nash tried for a backbreaker submission but Sabin didn’t oblige. Nash hit another big boot to the face and went for the jackknife power bomb but Sabin hit him with several punches. Sabin got Nash up for the Cradle Shock but Shelley grabbed Nash’s legs. Instead Sabin dropkicked Nash’s knee and hit Shelley on the floor. Sabin got a two count after several clotheslines knocked Nash down to the mat. Sabin followed with a top rope legdrop but also got two. Sabin went up again but Shelley tripped him up. This allowed Nash to get to his feet so he could hit the jackknife power bomb to win.
Jeremy Borash spoke to the NWA World Tag Team champions, the only team to be in TNA all four years of existence, America’s Most Wanted. Not bad for a team that was made up on the spot during the opening shows in Alabama. Gail Kim stood by as Storm and Harris talked about how good they are. Kim said no matter whom Styles and Daniels had; she would help AMW retain the belts.
(5) “Phenomenal” AJ Styles and “Fallen Angel” Christopher Daniels became NWA World Tag Team champions when they defeated America’s Most Wanted (“Tennessee Cowboy” James Storm and “Wildcat” Chris Harris w/Gail Kim).
Styles and Daniels came alone so their Gail Kim neutralizer would have to wait. Styles and Daniels controlled the match with their X Division background and totally embarrassed the champions until Styles went to the ropes and Harris dropped it. This sent Styles crashing to the floor. Daniels slid out and a brawl broke out between the teams. Styles went to hit Storm with a move but ended up crashing on a guard rail. Harris re-entered the ring as Storm threw Styles in. AMW went to work on Styles with several tags and some assistance from Kim. Styles survived this onslaught fighting out of the 8 Second Ride with a Pele’ kick to Storm’s head. Daniels tagged in and went to work on both members of AMW. Harris was hit with the Blue Thunder Driver when Kim got on the apron. This brought out a girl (I think she won the Atlanta Gut Check competition in 2004) who beat down Kim. AMW went for a double team but Styles sent Storm to the floor. Storm hit Daniels with a chair and Harris got a roll up for two. Styles hit Harris with a pumphandle gutbuster and missed the Spiral Tap. Harris decked Styles with the handcuffs but Daniels pulled Andrew Thomas to the floor. AMW went for the Death Sentence but Daniels hit Harris with a DVD for two. Harris was saved from Angels Wings by Storm’s clothesline. Storm got his cowboy hat but Daniels hit the Angels Wings. Harris dropped an elbow on Thomas to break up the pin. But Storm missed his target and accidentally hit Harris with the beer bottle. This allowed Styles to hit Harris with a frogsplash and Daniels to hit a BME to win the belts. As Styles and Daniels celebrated with the fans, TNA officials and security helped Harris to the locker room.
Jeremy Borash talked to Sting about the King of the Mountain match. They played a recap of the four year history of TNA, from the initial Alabama event to tonight’s PPV. After the video Mike Tenay stood in the ring. He was there to introduce the new public face of TNA Wrestling. He was one and only “Louisville Lip” Jim Cornette! Tenay left Cornette alone in the ring. He said the previous match was what tag team wrestling was all about. Cornette called TNA the new face of wrestling and he was tired of looking at the old one. Shame we weren’t in Nashville where the promotion shined, the crowd would have appreciated this moment more. Cornette talked about Panda Energy’s mistake hiring people who had old grudges to settle and other calamities. Cornette said he was here to protect their investment in TNA Wrestling. After running himself in circles, Cornette wrapped up promising he wouldn’t back down from anyone in the locker room who tested his resolve.
Jeremy Borash spoke to “Big Poppa Pump” about his match with Samoa Joe.
(6) NWA World X Division champion Samoa Joe defeated “Big Poppa Pump” Scott Steiner.
Joe debuted at Slammiversary 2005 beating Sonjay Dutt. Joe didn’t look imitated at all by the former WCW World champion. Steiner used a fireman’s carry takeover and a double lag takedown to try and work over Joe. Steiner hit some chops and bealed Joe out of a corner but couldn’t get the ride move he wanted. After being insulted, Joe snapped delivering stiff kicks to the face of Steiner. But Steiner hit Joe with a belly to belly suplex and some kicks. Steiner went for a corner move but ran into Joes’s boot. Joe gave Steiner the facewash but Steiner slid to the floor to avoid the Ole kick. So Joe followed out with a between the ropes forearm. Steiner threw Joe into the ring stairs and in the ring hit the Steinerline and the pumpup elbow drop before some push ups. Joe chopped Steiner but Steiner poked Joe in the eyes. Steiner hit Joe with a power bomb but Joe was able to lock Steiner in some sort of choke hold. Joe released the hold and tagged Steiner with several punches but a corner whip allowed Steiner to hit Joe with his own standing STO. Joe and Steiner went to the floor where Steiner tossed Joe into the seated area. Steiner grabbed a chair but Joe hit him with chops and then the chair. But Joe’s clothesline hit the ring post instead of Steiner. Rudy Charles went to count both men out as they refused to re-enter the ring. Steiner made it in at six while Joe beat the count at nine. Joe hit several palm strikes and other moves that led to the senton and the Standing STO. Joe hit Steiner with a Falcon’s Arrow/Blue Thunder Driver thing but got two. Steiner went for a clothesline but Joe ducked and locked in the Kokina Clutch. When he didn’t get a tap out, Joe released the hold. Steiner hit a low blow of sorts and a half nelson suplex. Steiner locked Joe in the Steiner Recliner but Joe refused to tap out. Joe stood up, dropped Steiner on the top rope and hit a powerslam to win out of nowhere.
They played a promo for the July 16th Victory Road PPV. Tenay and West spoke to the home crowd as the TNA crew prepared for the main event of the evening. Jeremy Borash spoke to the NWA World Heavyweight champion “Captain Charisma” Christian Cage about the match tonight.
(7) In the King of the Mountain Match, No one won as Jim Cornette held up NWA World Heavyweight championship. In the match were “Captain Charisma” Christian Cage vs. Abyss (w/Father James Mitchell), Ron “the Truth” Killings, King of the Mountain one winner Jeff Jarrett and Sting.
Hopefully you know the rules because I would be here until next PPV explaining them to you. Basically it’s a reverse ladder match with a penalty box and other props. After being introduced, Abyss grabbed two tables and set them up near Tenay and West. Larry Zbyszko was the keeper of the penalty box and the title belt. Everyone brawled in, out and above the ring. Killings and Cage briefly worked together on Jarrett but it ended when Cage mocked Killings’ dance skills. Sting and Abyss fought around the ring as Cage dumped Killings to the floor then hit Jarrett with a plancha. Killings and Sting escaped an Abyss double chokeslam and Killings hit with a scissor kick. Killings flew out of the ring onto Abyss, Jarrett and Cage. He was followed by Sting who jumped off the penalty box. Killings pinned Jarrett and sent JJ to the box for two minutes. Abyss got the tables as Sting tossed Jarrett in the box. Killings went for a ladder and Cage gave it to him, jaw first. Sting stood by the penalty box mocking Jarrett. Abyss went to press slam Cage but Cage slipped out and rolled up Abyss for the pin. This sent Abyss to the box and made Cage title eligible. Jarrett got out and dragged Cage to the floor as Sting laid the boots into Killings’ ribs. The four men kept beating down each other as Abyss shook the penalty box. As Abyss was freed Cage and Jarrett fought on the floor with a ladder. Jarrett stopped his attack and helped Abyss make a house of tables outside the ring. Killings missed a sidekick and Jarrett hit the Stroke to the floor on the guard rail and Jarrett pinned Killings on the floor. Killings went to the box while Jarrett can climb the ladder. Cage and Jarrett brawled into the fans as Sting and Abyss joined them. While Cage tried to throw Jarrett off the seating balcony, Sting and Abyss traded hip tosses onto the concrete floor. Cage and Jarrett brawled over to the hard cam side of the building. As the foursome fought, Killings got out of the box and went to hang the title belt. Abyss finally realized what was going on and he tipped Killings off the ladder. Jarrett and Abyss decked the other three with a ladder. Killings jumped on the ladder but he got dropped to the floor. Cage locked Jarrett in the ladder and used it to climb the title to the top. Abyss grabbed Cage and they fell to the floor. All five men struggled to find oxygen. Killings got in the ring and went to hang the belt but Abyss sent him crashing to the floor and the ladder plus Earl Hebner hit the canvas. Jarrett grabbed the belt from Abyss but Abyss hit the Black Hole Slam to gain title climbing rights. Abyss went up the ladder but Sting sent him into the tables Abyss set up. Cage and Sting traded punches in the middle of the ring but sting hit the splash and the Scorpion Death Lock. Jarrett snuck in and went to hang the belt but Sting stopped him. Jarrett went to use the guitar but Cage stopped him and sting hit the Scorpion Death Drop. Just as Cage was going to hang the belt, Zbyszko snuck in and tossed Cage to the floor. Sting decked Zbyszko and used the knocked out Hebner to count the pin to make himself title eligible. Sting grabbed the tile belt and was about to hang it when Cage stopped him. Just as it looked like one of them would win, Earl Hebner screwed them both, sending them crashing to the floor. Jeff Jarrett climbed and hung the belt as fans littered the ring with soda bottles. Just as Jarrett thought he won, Jim Cornette came out and sent Rudy Charles to grab the belt.
