Despite Undertaker defeating John Cena at Vengeance, the original plan was for John Cena to actually go over cleanly.

Apparently, Vince McMahon decided at the last minute that he did not want to sacrifice one of his only loyal "veterans" in the company to someone who has yet to truly prove he belongs at the top of the roster. Thus, he scrapped the plans and had Undertaker go over. This didn't please too many backstage, and it caused confusion, heat, and second-guessing backstage the day of the show.

While the finish was changed, it is not known if the whole match was rewritten. Many could've understood Undertaker kicking out of the FU if he was trying to save face for a job, but it didn't make too much sense for him to do that - and win the match.
